The City of Longview has saved more than $9,000, reduced its electricity and natural gas usage, and has increased employee productivity in the first six months after going to a “4-10” work schedule for most city employees. Human Resources Director Robbie Berg provided a review of the change at last night’s City Council meeting. Some of the numbers show a 7% reduction in average monthly fuel consumption, and an 8% reduction in miles driven. She says that there’s been a reduction of carbon emissions of approximately 50.4 metric tons over a year, equivalent to taking nearly ten cars off the road. Natural gas usage is down by more than 2,000 therms, saving the city more than $2,700. She says that they got an extra 328 productive hours out of city employees. She also says that a survey of employees and consumers both show that they approve of the change. City Manager Bob Gregory tells the Council that there would “probably be a revolt” if he tried to go back to the 5-day schedule. The City Council approved continuing the 4-10 schedule, with another review after one year.
