This year’s 9/11 Memorial at Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue will be different, as the ceremony is moved to noon local time, and they dedicate the new permanent memorial site at the Cowlitz 2 Main Station on Vine Street in Kelso. Chief Dave LaFave says that the permanent memorial started as a project from the students involved in the Fire Science program, but as it developed, Coordinator Brad Yoder helped take over the completion of the site. One aspect of the site will be the inclusion of an actual piece of steel from the World Trade Center towers, but he says that artifact won’t actually arrive in the local area until this next spring. A U. S. military honor guard will also be involved in this year’s ceremony, hoisting the colors during the observance. The ceremony is set to start at noon on Saturday at the Cowlitz 2 Main Station, located at 701 Vine Street in Kelso. All are invited to attend. There’s also an observance planned at the Woodland Fire Station at 11 am on Saturday, where the names of the 343 new York firefighters who died in the 9/11 attacks will be read. An open house will follow.
