Snow Alert

Posted on 23rd February 2011 at 08:42

The Weather Service is still forecasting heavy snow for the local area, starting later today and continuing into tomorrow. There have already been some scattered snow showers overnight, but there’s been no real accumulation, except above 500 feet in elevation. They’re saying that it’s really supposed to start coming down this afternoon, continuing until about midnight. The latest forecast calls for two to five inches of snow on the valley floors and lowlands, and up to 10 inches in the nearby hills. From 500 to a thousand feet, two to six inches is expected during the day today, with another five to 12 inches from tonight through tomorrow night. It’s really going to be dumping in the Cascades, with six to 12 inches today in the foothills, and up to 20 inches in the higher Cascades. They also say that west winds of 15 to 25 miles an hour will make for extremely difficult driving conditions in the passes.

Event Postponed

Posted on 23rd February 2011 at 08:41

The anticipated snow is already affecting events that have been planned for this evening. Looking ahead at hazardous weather conditions, a public forum on government transparency that was going to be held at the Regional Conference and Events Center is being postponed. Wahkiakum county activist and former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic was setting up the event, bringing in a number of current and former state officials to talk about maintaining access to government at all levels. So far, two other events planned for tonight are still on. The Cowlitz County Commissioners plan to meet with officials from each of the cities in the latest installment of the Government Summit, reviewing plans for increased collaboration and other methods for cutting costs in local government. That meeting is set to run from 6 to 8 pm at the Regional Conference and Events Center. An LCC Center Stage production called “Three Views of Love” is also scheduled to open tonight at the Rose Center for the Arts. Three one-act plays are set to be presented, starting at 7:30 pm at the Center Stage Theatre.

Longview Suicide

Posted on 23rd February 2011 at 08:39

Longview Police report that it looks like a 19 year-old woman took her own life yesterday afternoon at a home on Grove Street. The woman’s father reported the death at about 3:45 yesterday afternoon, saying that it appeared that she died from a single gunshot wound to the head. The coroner’s office and LPD detectives also responded to process the scene. No information on what led to the incident has been released.

Speedy Mart Fire

Posted on 23rd February 2011 at 08:38

A kitchen fire is responsible for significant damage done to Speedy Mart, located at 7th and Tennant Way in Longview. At 11:18 yesterday morning, employees reported that a fire started in the kitchen, with flames flaring up in a fryer. A fire suppression system was activated, but that wasn’t able to fully contain the fire. The store was evacuated as Longview Fire responded from just a couple of blocks away. The fire was put out in just a few minutes, but smoke went through the entire store, doing significant damage. One estimate puts the total damage done at about $700,000. Seventh Avenue was closed for a time, as a fire line was run across the street. Fire crews were able to clear the scene in about an hour; the store is closed this morning, and there’s been no estimate of when they might re-open.

WMS Fire

Posted on 23rd February 2011 at 08:37

Woodland Middle School was evacuated shortly before noon yesterday, when a fire was reported in a restroom at the school. A fire alarm was reported at 11:48 am, when smoke and flames were seen in a men’s bathroom near the gym. The fire was eventually traced to a light fixture in the ceiling that had shorted out. Damage was limited to the one bathroom, and no injuries were reported. Classes resumed after the fire was put out.
