Longview Fire crews have had an early day, getting up to deal with a fire reported this morning at an apartment building in the 200 block of 25th Avenue. Around 1:20 am, heavy smoke was reported to be seen coming from some vacant apartment at 228 25th Avenue. Battalion Chief Kevin Taylor says that five engines and a Chief’s unit responded, working on the scene for several hours. Taylor says that the fire started in one of the two units on the lower level of the four-plex, and then extended into the neighboring unit. The two units on the upper level received extensive smoke damage. Apparently, the building had been foreclosed on several months ago, and had been vacant for some time. Longview Police report that transients have been seen at the building in recent weeks. Taylor says that they’ve determined where the fire started, but they’re still unsure about the exact cause. No one was in the building when the fire started, so no injuries were reported. Currently, the damage is estimated at about $40,000.
