A Winlock native who was working as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan is dead after an explosion near a prison in the capitol city of Kabul. CBS News reports that Mike Hughes was one of two contractors killed Monday, when an explosives-laden car crashed into two NATO vehicles as they were leaving a prison in the east part of Kabul. Hughes had been working for Dynacorp International, and had been consulting with Afghanis on prison operations. The 38 year-old had graduated from Winlock High School back in 1993; today’s Daily News reports that he was supposed to come back to the United States later this week, so he could get married to a classmate, Holly Orbino. Memorial services are being arranged.
