Jesse Allen Morton, 24, of St. Helens is pleading “no contest” to arson and reckless burning counts that were filed in connection with a burning spree back in July of last year. On July 5th of last year, fire crews in St. Helens responded to eight fires over the span of just a few hours, all set between 20 and 40 minutes apart. One of those fires destroyed a camp trailer, while another did $50,000 damage to a church. Investigators put together a timeline, eventually leading them to Morton. The South County Spotlight reports that eight counts of first-degree arson, three counts of second-degree criminal mischief and two counts of second-degree burglary were plea-bargained down to felony first-degree attempted arson and two counts of misdemeanor reckless burning. Sentencing is set for next March.
