A BASE jumper sparked a large search effort Saturday morning in the area of the Hoffstadt Bridge on the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, an incident that took place at about 6:30 am on Saturday. Today’s Daily News reports on the event, which was reported to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office by a Forest Service maintenance worker. The worker says that he saw the man jump, doing a back flip off of the railing, and didn’t see any parachute deploy. Deputies were joined by fire agencies, the State Patrol, Cowlitz County Search and Rescue and Forest Service personnel, looking for a dead or injured person; around noon, the jumper walked out of the woods, carrying his chute. He met with Deputies, reporting that he was fine. Chief Criminal Deputy Charlie Rosenzweig says that there isn’t any specific state law that prohibits jumping off of a state-owned bridge, so no charges are anticipated at this time. It’s also unclear if there will be any attempt to try and recover the costs of the search effort that was mounted.
