Boating Mishap

Posted on 30th June 2014 at 16:15

The Coast Guard is suspending its efforts to try and find a boater from Battle Ground who has been missing in the Columbia River between Woodland and St. Helens since Saturday. The search effort got started around 5:30 Saturday afternoon, when a boat owned by Jay Jones, 25, of Battle Ground was found running by itself near the mouth of the Lewis River. It’s also reported that at least one 911 caller saw a person in the water. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol responded, along with boats and a helicopter from the Coast Guard. The search effort continued through yesterday evening, with no sign of Jones reported. Coast Guard officials in Portland say that based on the water conditions and other factors, it’s unlikely that anyone who has been in the river for that long is still alive. While the Coast Guard portion of the search is being suspended, Clark County officials say that they still plan to be on the water again tomorrow, continuing the search effort.
