The road to the Climber’s Bivouac on Mount St. Helens is now open, and will remain open for the rest of the 2014 climbing season. The Forest Service announced the opening of Forest Road 81-830 yesterday, meaning that the primary trailhead for Mount St. Helens is now available. Forest Service officials say that you will still need to drive cautiously and slowly on Forest Road 81-830, as grading and guard rail repair will continue through the month of June. If you do climb the mountain, you’re advised to use extreme caution, and to stay off snow cornices at the crater rim. More information on climbing permits and conditions on trails up the mountain is available through the Mount St. Helens Institute. You can call them at 360-449-7883, or go to their website at mshinstitute.org.
