Investigators are still working to determine the cause of a Sunday night fire that destroyed a home in Columbia City Sunday night. Chief Jay Tappan with Columbia River Fire and Rescue says that the fire was reported at 255 M Street at about 7:15 Sunday night, and by the time fire crews rolled up, the home was engulfed in flames. The residents of the home, Charles and Martha Leachman, were not at home when the fire broke out; Tappan says that they had to work hard to keep the fire from damaging other nearby homes. 25 firefighters were involved in the effort, and they were able to keep any other structures from being damaged. The home and its contents were a total loss, estimated at about $500,000.
