Negotiators for Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging and local 153 of the AWPPW continue to meet, still trying to come to an agreement on a new contract between the company and the union. Today’s Daily News has an update on the contract talks, reporting that they’re discussing two major issues, a general wage increase and health care benefits for retirees. They also say that negotiators met with State Senator Karen Keiser of Des Moines, discussing issues connected to changes in state and federal law that might affect health insurance coverage for future retirees. No details on those discussions are being released at this time. Local 153 members continue to work under the old contract, which expired on May 31st. Two contracts offers have been rejected by the rank-and-file, but union officials say that they remain committed to working toward development of a new contract with the company.
