The Lower Columbia College Fighting Smelt Forensics Team continues to perform well at the highest levels of competition, finishing fifth in the nation among community colleges at this year’s Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive Tournament, held last weekend in Indianapolis. Every member of the team helped contribute points to the final team score; Marty Kay of Kelso and Ben Solheim of Longview placed highest, finishing 5-1 in the preliminary rounds of Novice Parliamentary Debate. They lost in the quarterfinals to a team from the University of Kentucky. Solheim was named National Champion Speaker for the division, while Kay placed fifth. Kay also made the quarterfinals of After-Dinner Speaking, and Bonnie Ellis of Cathlamet also received an “Excellent” award in Impromptu Speaking. 80 universities and community colleges from across the country competed in the event.
