The commute on the first day of school after Christmas break could be a bit challenging, with dense fog and icy roadways down in the Kelso-Longview area. At five this morning, dense fog blanketed the downtown core, with temperatures down to 27 degrees. Streets and parking lots were coated with ice, though driving on main roadways could be a bit better. If you’re heading into the Vancouver-Portland area today, you’ll also need to be ready for the possibility of strong, gusty winds. East winds of 25 to 35 miles an hour are possible today, with gusts of up to 50 miles an hour, particularly heading up toward Troutdale and the Columbia River Gorge. Budget some extra time for the morning commute; make sure windows and mirrors are clear, increase following distances, and use some extra care when accelerating and braking.
