The man who’s making accusations of abuse against the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office is out of their custody, sentenced to prison time for several criminal charges. The Daily News has the latest on Sigrin Hjaltalin, 24, who had pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree domestic violence assault, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and witness tampering. Prosecutor Dan Bigelow says that Hjaltalin’s criminal history put him at the “top of the charts” for sentencing, and he did receive 51 months at the prison in Shelton. The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office is investigating claims by Hjaltalin that he was abused by Wahkiakum County Jail staff, claiming that they pepper sprayed him more than 30 times and hit him with a baton. Jail officials say they did use some force on Hjaltalin, but they also say that it was justified in dealing with an unruly inmate. That investigation continues.
