Jail Death

Posted on 30th December 2016 at 09:12

An investigation is under way after a 26 year-old Longview woman was found dead yesterday morning in the Cowlitz County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office reports that the body of Britney Helene Smith was found at 6 yesterday morning, unresponsive in her cell. Smith had been arrested and booked on Tuesday, picked up on drug charges. They say that she was in possession of a small plastic bag that appeared to contain illegal drugs at the time of her booking, so she was placed alone in a cell, routinely checked each half-hour. Chief Criminal Deputy Charlie Rosenzweig says that a similar plastic bag was found near Smith inside of her room at the jail. CPR and other life-saving measures were attempted, without success. An autopsy was conducted yesterday afternoon, with no obvious signs of trauma, injury or violence found as a factor in the death. Samples are being sent for toxicology tests, which will take six to eight weeks to process. County Coroner Tim Davidson says that the findings on the cause and manner of death are “pending” at this time.
