JHB and the Shutdown

Posted on 16th October 2013 at 16:09

Third District Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler says that it’s time to stop the yelling, end the government shutdown and raise the nation’s debt ceiling. Beutler released a statement yesterday, saying that House Republican leaders have worked hard on their position, but she says quote-“that it’s time to reopen the government and ensure that we don’t default on our debt.” Beutler says that she will not be voting for any “poison pills” that don’t have a chance of passing the Senate or being signed by the President. Beutler says that she still opposes the Affordable Care Act, but given the lack of compromise coming from the White House, this standoff could continue the end of Obama’s term as President. At this time, Beutler says that it would be best to re-start the government, then work to change the ACA at a future date. Beutler points to the decertification of the Longview Life Flight helicopter and the inability to get fishing permits as examples of how the shutdown is having devastating impacts on local residents. In her final comment, Beutler says that quote-“Nothing positive can be accomplished by prolonging this shutdown any longer, or crossing the debt limit threshold. It’s time for my colleagues to face reality.”
