The March unemployment rate in Cowlitz County improved somewhat, but the Employment Security Department says that there is still little improvement in the local labor market. The jobless rate dropped from 10.2 percent in February to 9.4 percent in March, but Regional Economist Scott Bailey says that 400 local jobs were lost during the month, on a seasonally-adjusted basis. Year-to-year, Cowlitz County has picked up a net of 900 jobs, which is 2.5 percent higher than the same time last year. Bailey says that this drop was “fairly typical,” and that both initial and continuing unemployment claims continue to be stable. Statewide, the jobless rate is at 6.9 percent in March, down from 7.3 percent in February.
