Fundraising efforts are now under way, with friends of the family of ten month-old Olivia Marie Smith of Longview trying to raise money to help pay for the baby’s funeral. Cowlitz County Health Department officials now confirm that the infant died over the weekend, succumbing to a bacterial meningitis infection. County health officials say that the baby developed a fever one week ago today. She was taken to St. John Medical Center, and then was transferred to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland. Friends of the Smiths says that Olivia suffered several seizures at the hospital in Portland, underwent several CAT scans, and was placed on life support. Despite the best efforts of the doctors in Portland, she died on Sunday. Because of privacy laws, County Health officials have been unable to release Olivia’s name, but friends of the family have put up the “Love for Olivia” page on Facebook, along with a link to gofundme-dot-com. They’re asking for folks to share their sentiments on the Facebook page, also asking everyone to go to the gofundme page, where you can make a contribution to help with the medical and funeral expenses. In addition, a fundraising car wash is planned for this Saturday at Behrend’s Auto Body on South Pacific in Kelso. This coming Monday between 5 and 8 pm, the McDonald’s on 38th Avenue will be donating a portion of their take to Olivia’s parents.
