As Mahlon Moe prepares to wrap up his 37 years of work at the Mint Valley Golf Course, the City of Longview is working to find his replacement. At a Longview City Council workshop last night, Assistant City Manager and Parks Director Dave Campbell disclosed that Nicholas Van of Mount Vernon has emerged as the favorite to take over operation of the course. Campbell says Van’s sales and marketing background is a real plus…mvoperator…Campbell admits that Van is not a golf pro, but he is an avid golfer, playing in as many as 17 tournaments per year, and volunteers as a golf instructor. In his operation plan, Van says that he would hire a Class A PGA pro to help operate the course; he also has proposals to improve the pro shop and restaurant, along with plans to increase outreach to junior and women golfers. After getting consensus on the selection of Van from the Council, Campbell says that they’ll work on finalizing the contract, with a goal of having that ready for Council approval by the end of November. Moe plans to retire at the end of this year.
