A home on Studebaker Road near Castle Rock was evacuated for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon, after the resident reported finding what he thought was a pipe bomb. The resident called 911 shortly before 2 pm, saying that he’d found the item nearby in the woods; he described the device as about six inches in length, one inch in diameter, and possibly having a fuse. The man had moved the device into his garage. The man was advised to evacuate the house, along with a 100-foot area around the garage, while the Portland Police Bomb Squad was called in. They arrived shortly after 4 pm, and removed the item, which they say did not appear to be explosive. Authorities didn’t say what the item actually might be.
