Along with the increased DUI patrols on area roadways, the Washington Parks and Recreation Commission is announcing that additional law enforcement officers will be out on the water this weekend, looking for impaired boaters during the national “Operation Dry Water” campaign. Today, tomorrow and Sunday, marine law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout for BUI, or boating under the influence violations. Parks and Rec officials say that the goal is to reduce the numbers of injuries or deaths that result from people who are under the influence as they drive their boats. Between 2007 and the present day, at least 39 people have died in boating crashes where alcohol was a factor. This weekend’s emphasis patrols are aimed at raising awareness of this problem, and in getting impaired boaters off the water.
