The Washington Department of Ecology is getting into the case involving the shoreline permit that Cowlitz County approved for Millennium Bulk Logistics, filing a “motion to intervene” with the Shoreline Hearings Board. The environmental groups that filed the appeal are applauding the move, saying that it shows that the state understands the importance of the case. Jan Hasselman, the attorney for Earthjustice, says that this is a big move for the state. Officials with the Department of Ecology say that they’re intervening, to make sure that they’re included in any discussions as the appeal of the permit moves through the legal process. Ecology says that they will be asked to issue several permits connected to the project, and they want to be sure that the environmental review and all permit decisions are legally sound. The Shoreline Hearings Board will hear the appeal in the middle of April, planning to hold at least part of the hearing in Longview. A ruling on the application is due by June 14th.
