A 48 year-old woman from Katie, Texas, who was injured in a fall on Mount Saint Helens, apparently decided that riding in a stokes litter wasn’t the best way to get off the mountain, and decided to pay for a private helicopter to evacuate her. Skamania County Undersheriff Dave Cox says that Nancy Allen had climbed the mountain Tuesday night, with her 18 year-old daughter. On the descent, Allen and her daughter lost the trail, and she fell off of a rocky outcropping. Allen contacted the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office around 8 pm on Tuesday. Their search and rescue team responded, along with the Volcano Rescue Team out of Yacolt. Though Allen’s injuries weren’t serious, she was unable to walk, and was loaded into the litter. Around 5:20 yesterday morning, Allen apparently decided that she’d had enough of the stokes basket, and decided to hire a private helicopter to airlift her and her daughter out. Around 6:30 yesterday morning, that chopper picked up Allen and the 18 year-old at the 6,100-foot level of the mountain. Cox says that the name of the helicopter company and their destination haven’t been made available at this time.
