The Longview City Council is turning to the Kuntz Fund to help pay for repairs and upgrades at R. A. Long Park, right in the center of the city. City Council member Mary Jane Melink says that this is a chance to restore one of the city’s jewels as other improvements come along…ralpark…Melink and Mayor Don Jensen had originally suggested that they go into the Kuntz Fund for $200,000 to help implement phase one of the R. A. Long Park Master Plan, which was adopted by the City Council several years ago. After it was noted that the proposal wouldn’t cover the design and repairs that were being suggested, Mike Wallin made a motion to increase the Kuntz Fund contribution to $300,000. With $100,000 already budgeted in this year’s Capital Improvements Plan, that will make $400,000 available for this project. This allocation will take up about half of the Kuntz Fund, a bequeathal made by the Kuntz family, specifically directed to improvements in Longview’s parks. City Manager Bob Gregory says that design of the project will take place this year, with construction to follow in spring and summer of next year.
