A 27 year-old woman is safe and sound this morning, warming up after spending more than an hour yesterday afternoon in the Toutle River. Around 4:30 pm, a woman called 911 from the area of Burma Road and Toutle Park Road, saying that her sister had fallen off of a raft, and was clinging into a log in the river. She says that they had put in near Tower Road, and then ran into trouble upstream of the Mickey Mouse Bridge. Deputies had some trouble finding the exact location where Kristen Schmotzer was located, also having to rappel down a 25-foot slope to get to the river’s edge. They say Schmotzer was about 25 feet out in the river, in an area of some swift water. Using some equipment provided by the Sheriff’s Office, Schmotzer’s boyfriend was able to get out into the river and performed the rescue shortly after 5 pm. They say Schmotzer’s legs were cramping and she was somewhat hypothermic, but was otherwise unhurt.
