Safeway Fine

The two Safeway stores in Longview are among 659 stores in the chain that are covered by a settlement between the chain and the Environmental Protection Agency, where the Oakland-based grocer is agreeing to pay a $600,000 civil penalty due to illegal emissions of gases from its freezer equipment. The settlement is billed as the largest of its kind; the EPA is also saying that Safeway agrees to spend more than four million dollars in implementing a chain-wide plan to reduce the emissions of HCFC-22, a gas that’s said to be 1,800 times more potent than carbon dioxide as an ozone-layer-depleting greenhouse gas. EPA officials say that this is a first-of-its-kind settlement that will benefit all Americans, and can serve as a model for comprehensive solutions that will help to improve compliance with the Clean Air Act.
