Classes start today for kids in the Kelso, Longview, Rainier and Woodland School Districts, with new school zone speed limit detection cameras going hot at Kessler, Olympic and St. Helens Elementary Schools. Those are in addition to the cameras that have been operating at Mint Valley and CVG Elementary Schools for the past couple of years. It’s also not the first day of school for all of the kids in Kelso. Kindergarten through 5th-graders will all start classes today, while 6th and 9th-graders will be taking part in the district’s second “Transition Day.” Those students will have the school buildings to themselves today, with student mentors and teachers helping them find their way around their new facilities. District officials say that this is a chance for those kids to become acclimated before the full crush of students fill the halls. All other Kelso secondary school students will start classes tomorrow. Lower Columbia College will be starting the Fall Quarter on Monday, the 23rd.
