Members of Service Employees International Union Local 49 were joined by other labor representatives, family members and other supporters at a rally held outside of St. John Medical Center, where they made a public call for hospital management to improve their health care benefit offer. Tara McElligott works in the Emergency Department at St. John, and she says that the health care package being offered is simply unaffordable. McElligott says that there’s no way that families can afford the high deductibles in the health plans that the hospital is offering. In addition, union officials are complaining about the wage package being offered, which includes no raise in the current contract year, and only one-percent raises in the next two years. Another bargaining session is planned for today; the current contract expires on September 30th. SEIU Local 49 represents service technicians, medical assistants, certified nursing assistants, and housekeeping staff at St. John.
