A couple of things are planned for today, in memory of Sherod Nichols, 16, of Longview, who died last year after battling a congenital nerve disease called Neurofibromatosis Type 1. The disease caused tumors to grow along the nerves in his body. Despite his problems, Nichols served as a manager to the football and basketball teams at R. A. Long. Two events in his memory will be held today at Longview Memorial Park, a balloon release between 2 and 2:30 pm, followed by a candlelight vigil at 6 pm. Today’s Daily News reports that Nichols’ family has set up a foundation in his honor, the “Dino Doozer Foundation.” They have a goal of sending children with NF Type 1 to a special camp in Virginia. This year, they were able to send two children to Camp New Friends, and Nichols’ mother tells the paper that they have a goal of sending five kids this next year. Donations can be made in Sherod Nichols’ name at Home Town National Bank in Longview.
