Fire suppression equipment did its job yesterday evening at the Solvay Chemical plant on Industrial Way. Longview Fire reports that they got a 911 call from plant employees at about 6:37 pm, after a pump motor failed and started a fire in the east end of the facility. Fire units were on the scene within five minutes, but the plant’s automatic sprinklers and foam suppression system had already activated, putting the fire out quickly. Longview Fire Battalion Chief Kevin Taylor says that the suppression system prevented the fire from threatening liquid hydrogen tanks that were in the vicinity. There’s been no damage estimate as of yet, and it’s not known if the fire will affect operations at the facility. No injuries or environmental exposure was reported.
