Spirit Lake Meeting

Posted on 31st October 2016 at 05:40

The final public meeting of a ten-person committee that’s working on a long-term management scheme for Spirit Lake is being held today in Kelso. This committee has been assembled by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, with the goal of developing a “decision-making framework” for long-term management of Spirit Lake, the outlet tunnel from the lake, and the Toutle River drainage north of the volcano. Today’s meeting will reportedly be focused on outflow options, along with hydrologic, seismic and volcanic information that go along with each method. The committee will not actually be making any specific recommendations to the Forest Service, but they will be developing a “framework” for decision-making. Today’s meeting at the Cowlitz County Event Center runs from 10:15 am to 2:45 pm; a public comment period is set to begin at 2:15 pm. Get more information on the project web page.
