A 22 year-old transient is under arrest on a charge of second-degree assault, picked up late last week in connection with a stabbing that took place in the course of a street fight that happened in July. Today’s Daily News reports that Gary Lee Johnston, Jr., was arrested last Saturday in connection with the fight that happened on July 24th in the Highlands. During that fight, Lechaun Baker, 42, was stabbed; he claims that he’d gone to the scene to try and protect his girlfriend from another group that was going to “jump” her. Baker drove to the scene, armed with a baseball bat, and reportedly hit at least one woman with that bat. The group then surrounded Baker, and in the ensuing melee, he was stabbed. Johnston reportedly tells police that he acted in self-defense, and was also trying to protect the woman who’d been hit with the bat. Johnston was already being held on a felony drug charge, and is also being served with a warrant for driving while suspended. His bail totals $52,00. David William Emter, 25, of Longview also faces charges in connection with this incident.
