Here’s a warning; if you’re going to this evening’s event at LCC, your legs might be longer when you head home, as the best yarn-spinners, joshers and BS’ers in the area will be competing for cash prizes. The LCC Fighting Smelt Forensics Team is teaming up with the Early Words Toastmaster Club to host “You Must Be Kidding: Tall Tales are a Tall Order,” a Tall Tales Demonstration speech contest. Three to five-minute presentations will be judged by the “highly exaggerated and improbable nature” that’s woven into their theme or plot; humor, costumes and props may also be used to support the tale being told. There are two divisions, for youth age 14 to 7, and adults age 18 and older. Speeches must be PG-13 in tone and use family-friendly language. The top prize in each division is $200, and the top-placing adults will also win a year’s membership in the Early Words Toastmasters. Signups start at 5:15 pm in room 136 at the Rose Center, and then the preliminary competition starts at 6:00 pm. The finals are set for 7:30 pm in the Heritage Room. There’s no charge to participate or to watch.
