In San Bernardino, California, the murder and mayhem trial of John Wayne Thomson, 53, is under way. The man who is the suspect in the July, 2006 murder of Lori Hamm of Kelso is accused of beating, stabbing and slashing Charles Ray Hedlund, 55, of Lucerne Valley, California in August of 2006. The San Bernardino Sun is covering the trial, relaying details about what District Attorney Robert Bulloch is calling a “gruesome crime.” Defense Attorney Mario Martinez claims that Hedlund’s killing was a reaction to homosexual advances that he had made to Thomson. Along with Hedlund’s murder, Thomson is being charged with robbery, carjacking, mayhem and two counts of attempted carjacking. Thomson is pleading not guilty to all charges. Prosecutors have indicated that they plan to seek the death penalty; Cowlitz County Prosecutor Sue Baur says that she plans to bring Thomson back to Kelso to stand trial for Hamm’s death, regardless of the outcome in California.
