A transient is under arrest after a tip jar theft reported yesterday at a fast food restaurant in downtown Longview. A 911 call came in from the 1400 block of Maple at about 4:30 pm, with the caller reporting that a man had stolen a tip jar containing several dollars. The caller followed the suspect down to an area near the Hall of Justice, where Jack Dewayne Hoggatt, 52, was stopped. Longview Police say that he was seen dropping money, and the 911 caller identified him as the suspect. However, when LPD contacted the restaurant, employees said that they hadn’t called 911, and didn’t care to prosecute a man over the theft of a couple of dollars. They said that he could have the money if he needed it that badly. Hoggatt was still taken into custody on charges of obstructing an officer and resisting arrest, and is currently being held on bail of $750.
