No one was injured when a man from Graham did what pilots call a “ground loop” as he was doing some landings on sand bars in the Toutle River. Around 2:20 yesterday afternoon, the folks who run the Riverdale Raceway east of Toutle reported that a small plane had flipped onto its top near their facility. Deputies and aid personnel responded to the area, where they met with Carey Gray, 54, of Graham. He explained to the Deputies that he had been flying his experimental plane, along with two others who were in similar aircraft. When trying to land on a sand bar, one of his plane’s wheels hit a rock, causing it to flip. The other pilots landed at Riverdale, and after the crashed plane was flipped back upright, they swapped some parts and actually flew it to the racetrack. The parts were swapped back, and the other two planes were flown back north. Gray says that he’s making arrangements to have the damaged plane towed back to Graham, while he reports the incident to the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
