Vader Name Change?

Posted on 31st October 2014 at 09:02

After being known as Vader for the past 101 years, there could be a move to change the town’s name back to “Little Falls,” the moniker that it had back in the early 1900’s. It’s being reported that the Vader City Council is mulling over the possible name change, as they move ahead during the latest budget process. Looking back in history, the Tacoma Public Library Washington Place Names Database says that the area now known as Vader was called “Sopenah” by the Northern Pacific Railway, but locals knew that town as “Little Falls.” Northern Pacific had another Little Falls in Minnesota on their line, so that was ruled out. Some local residents asked the Legislature to name the town “Toronto,” but that was disputed. A compromise agreement landed on Vader, which was the name of a local German resident. The Washington Legislature officially settled on Vader in March of 1913. In 2005, the topic actually went to a vote of the town’s residents, and “Little Falls” failed by just eleven votes. Mayor Ken Smith says that there’s been more discussion about making the change, but they also need to figure out how much a name change like that would cost.
