Today is Veterans Day, established to mark the end of World War 1, now honoring all current and former members of the U. S. armed forces. Today is a federal holiday, so all governmental offices are closed, including local, county, state and federal agencies. Schools are closed today, along with public libraries, and most financial institutions. Lower Columbia College is also closed today. The Post Office is closed, and there’s no home mail delivery. River Cities Transit is on regular routes, as is Waste Control.
Dr. John Mansfield, a retired Air Force Colonel, will recount his experiences as a military physician stationed overseas, working in Iraq and Haiti during his off-shore posting. Dr. Mansfield will have a free presentation about his overseas work at 6 pm this evening at Pacific Surgical Institute, located at 625 9th Avenue in Longview. Mansfield also plans to recognize veterans who attend tonight’s presentation.
A number of Veterans Day events are planned around the area, including a special musical performance at the Park Royal Health and Rehab Center on 16th Avenue in Longview. They’re bringing in 12 violinists to play for residents of the facility, along with other local veterans.
The Columbia River Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary 1909 in Rainier is hosting an open house for veterans, going from 10 am to 3 pm at the Rainier Senior Center. They will be bringing in a veterans service office representative to talk about benefits and assistance for veterans.
The Woodland VFW is holding a special ceremony, starting at 11 am, called “Remembering the Past and Present.” Following the ceremony, all veterans will be treated to a free lasagna lunch; family members and the public can also join in at five dollars per person. They’re located at 434 Davidson in Woodland.
At the Amber Assisted Living facility in Clatskanie, they’re holding a “certificate ceremony” for area veterans, going from 2 to 4 pm. They’ll also have a social hour for veterans and their families, serving finger foods and beverages.
There’s a free lasagna dinner available to veterans and their families at the Clatskanie American Legion Hall, starting at 6 pm tonight. American Legion Post 68 in Clatskanie is located at 930 Northeast 5th Street.
Veterans can still play golf for free today at the Lewis River Golf Course east of Woodland; you can book a tee-time on the Lewis River Golf Club website, then present some sort of military ID at checkin.
Before or after that round, veterans can dine for free today at the Fat Moose Bar and Grill, located at 1388 Lewis River Road in Woodland.
Christopher’s by Appointment in Clatskanie is offering free haircuts to active duty military, reservists and veterans. Located at 245 West Columbia River Highway, they’ll be taking walk-ins from 10 am to 4 pm today.
