That odor wafting over the Longview area yesterday afternoon is being traced to a power outage at the Longview millsite. Fans and other gas-treatment equipment at the mill went down when the outage hit at about 3:45 yesterday afternoon, allowing materials called “non-condensable gases” to escape into the air. The noxious odors were caused by small amounts of sulfur and turpentine that were carried from the mill, but mill officials say that the amounts released did not pose any kind of health hazards. Local, state and federal officials were notified after the incident, along with local fire agencies and emergency services agencies. Power was restored by 6 pm; the cause of the outage remains under investigation.
