Highway 12 is closed near the White Pass summit, due to a washout that occurred yesterday. A stretch of nearly 50 miles is now closed to through traffic, going from milepost 138 at the intersection with Highway 123, going out to milepost 183, the Oak Creek feeding station. The washout below the road is at milepost 154.5, about five miles east of the White Pass summit. Washington Department of Transportation officials say that the slope underneath the highway has washed away, and is continuing to erode. They’re continuing to evaluate the situation, and are even looking for a way to safely examine the area that’s slumping. State Routes 410 and 123 are currently being used at alternate routes, but commercial traffic is NOT being allowed on either one of those routes. WashDOT officials say that this is similar to an incident that occurred in the same area back in 1995.
