Longview Police are working to find the source of a large amount of eight-gauge copper wire that was recovered yesterday morning at a site off of Memorial Park Drive. Longview School District employees called LPD at about 10:20 yesterday morning, reporting that two men were stripping wire near the Structured Learning Center. The two men were seen leaving the area on bicycles, abandoning about 26 pounds of the heavy-gauge wire. As officers were checking the area, they made contact with Nathan Lee Wheatley, 28, of Longview at a nearby metal recycler. Wheatley was taken into custody on several outstanding warrants, including charges of third-degree theft, obstructing an officer, resisting arrest and criminal trespass. He was also served with a no-bail Department of Corrections warrant, and a bicycle reported as stolen earlier in the day was recovered. However, police have not yet been able to locate the source of the wire that was recovered, and are asking anyone who might be missing a large amount of wire to call them at 442-5800.
