A large crowd is also expected this evening in Clatskanie, where the Port of St. Helens will be holding a special meeting to hold a public hearing on a proposed zoning change on nearly 1,000 acres of land at Port Westward. Port officials say that the rezone is needed to free up land for additional industrial uses. The land had been eyed by at least two companies for use as a possible coal export facility, but both have since pulled out. A group called “Clean Columbia County” is still concerned about increased rail traffic through the area to serve any kind of facility at Port Westward. This evening’s meeting is being held at Clatskanie Mid/High School, starting at 6:30 pm. It’s possible that the Port Commission could make a decision on the rezone proposal after taking the public testimony.
